Engine

To develop the engine of the 250R Freeride 2014, Austrians left the base of the 2-stroke KTM 250 EXC with a goal of reducing the weight (2 kg lighter) without removing the electric starter and make it more accessible in run. The 250R has a new block specific cylinder to Freeride, transfers have been adjusted to obtain optimum torque. There is no system of exhaust valves, the concept here is similar to that of a motorcycle engine trial. This provides the desired behavior easier while increasing the life of the piston (also specific to the Freeride 250), but also a little further simplify the mechanics of 2-stroke engine.

Compared to the KTM 250 EXC, so there is more to the exhaust valves and kick on the Freeride 250R, we also find an intermediate clutch cover and a new water pump shaft with a lightweight polymer gear. Weight gain at the low engine alone would 1 kilogram. Developing 25 hp, this engine was designed to work with an oil / gasoline mixture ratio of 1:80 (about 1.5%), which minimizes emissions typical 2-stroke smoke.
It a Keihin 28 mm which is responsible for feeding the mill Freeride, it contributes to the linearity of the bike but also to its low power consumption. Electronic hand, the mapping of the CDI has been modified to optimize the torque and traction. Two maps are available of origin (one standard and one soft) by connecting or disconnecting a pod at the steering column.

The clutch diaphragm spring type adopted on the Freeride 350 has not been maintained this year, 250 (such as 350) has a more flexible and better suited to the concept of the classic motorcycle system 6 springs. The master cylinder Formula ordering hydraulic clutch has been redesigned for greater precision. Developed specifically for freeride, the ratios of the gearbox (6 speed) are shorter than the 250 EXC. The latest report, which takes very long, is specially designed for wheelchair and fast connections.
Radiator cooling is simple (one piece), with a new fan with a thermostat to maintain a constant temperature, even in areas slow or crossings. The quiet of the Freeride 250 R is a new piece, it does not go under the engine as the 350, but on the side. Without looking like a classic pot two-time again this exhaust is very close to what we can see on the trial bikes. It also has an internal resonance chamber and silencer aluminum which limit the noise level.

Chassis

As on the 350, part of the Freeride 250 is composed of a steel part bolted with another party forged aluminum. The more compact engine allowed engineers to raise the frame 60 mm compared to the 350, which allows a greater ground clearance (380 mm). The rear frame is made of reinforced polymer and has handholds to move (or take ...) motorcycle hand, it also contributes to the lightness of the Freeride.

The braking Freeride is provided by a set master cylinder / caliper and Formula Braking wave discs (diameter 260 mm front and 210 mm rear). Maxxis tires have been specially developed for Freeride, these are some kinds of tires trial with a little taller and spaced knobs for better mud evacuation. KTM remains faithful to WP that handles suspensions including a fork 43 mm diameter and a damper connected directly to the swing (cast aluminum) rods without arms. The tank capacity is greater on the 250R: 7 liters against 5.5 liters for the 350, due to the higher consumption of block 2 time (measured in test). Finally, with 92.5 kg dry promised, the Freeride is the flyweight beginners enduro, 7 kg lighter than the 350.
